5 Minute Stovetop German Chocolate Cake Frosting

Yes it was as good as it looks.  Yes it took 5 minutes. A couple of weeks ago I made a big birthday dinner for my little brother and uncle who have birthdays in the same week.  When I asked my brother what kind of cake he wanted he requested a German Chocolate Cake.  I had never made a German chocolate cake, but never one to back down from a challenge, I set off to make a great one.  I was short on time so I simply used a boxed cake mix but if you have a favorite from-scratch chocolate cake recipe use it and I’m sure it will be even more fabulous than this.   I heard that this type of frosting could be done on the stovetop and so I set out to do just that.

Cooking tools

I used my trusty cast iron pan for this as I do for most of my recipes.  I’m in love with it and I’m someday I’m going to marry it. I will be in white of course. It will be in black.

Leah’s Ingredient Snobbery for this dish

I only use good Vanilla Extract.  My favorite is Neilsen Massey,  Try it and you will love it.

  1. Ingredients
  2. Here's how you do it! Give your nuts a rough chop and put them the in the frying pan over medium heat. Shake the pan until you smell the nuts or see them color and then remove them from the heat and reserve in a dish for later.
  3. Combine butter, evaporated milk, vanilla, egg yolks and brown sugar in your pan and cook over low heat until thick and creamy.
  4. Stir in nuts and coconut
  5. Remove from heat
  6. Frost your Beautiful cake! I sprinkled a tiny pinch of kosher salt over the top of the cake for good measure, but thats just me 😉
  7. It was the easiest and most delicious frosting I have ever made!
